NESAC Outreach Programme

NESAC has established outreach facility centre with the aid of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to undertake wide range of capacity building activities in the region. It has the multiple collaborations with IITs, NITs, Central and State Universities of the regions, R & D institutions and a large number of user departments. NESAC has been conducting 2 weeks courses for the last three years in Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS as well as advanced course in UAV remote sensing.

Course Details

About the course

It is an Introductory course to Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) and its applications in basic and advanced Geoscience research. It focusses on understanding of Remote sensing techniques (using both earth observation and Navigational satellites data) and GIS mapping to study geological activities on mother earth. The course consists of the series of lectures followed by hands-on/practical in the second half and includes basic remote sensing and GIS and advance remote sensing applications in Geosciences. The course is designed with a view to provide participants an understanding of the scientific concepts associated with remote sensing and its applications to various geoscientific problems. The participants will also gain knowledge and ability to process, analyze and apply Remote Sensing and GIS tool in various geological studies.

Location and accessibility

NESAC is located at Umiam (Barapani) about 20 km from Shillong, Meghalaya State. The nearest railway station is Guwahati, about 80km from NESAC. The nearest airports are Umiam (about 5 km) and Guwahati about 100 km from NESAC. City is famous for its picturesque landscape and pleasant climate. Places of tourist importance like Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak and Cherapunjee etc. are located in the vicinity of Shillong.

Important dates

The course will commence on February 10 and will end on February 14, 2020. Last date to apply for the course is January 25, 2020.

Duration and mode of course

The course would be of one week duration from February 10- 14, 2020 and shall be held at NESAC, Umiam Meghalaya. The course would have a blend of lecture on above topics, expert lectures, case studies, demonstrations and hands on exercises.


The Morning session comprises of 2-3 lectures each day on Remote Sensing and GIS Applications such as Ground water studies, Landslides studies, Industrial hazards, Earthquake precursors study, Active tectonic study etc., to name few. The Evening Session consists of Hands on/Practical classes. It also includes half day field visit to nearby areas for ground validation of satellite image interpretation.

01 Target Participants

The course is designed for professionals, faculty members, scientists and researchers (JRF/SRF/RA) in Geosciences and related fields. Preference will be given to the working professionals from Govt. and public sector organizations.

02 Accommodation

Accommodation will be arranged in the NESAC Hostel on twin sharing/single occupancy basis. The participants will have to pay nominal charges towards fooding and lodging.

03 Course Fee

The course fee is 6,000/-which includes registration kit & course materials. The amount should be payed through crossed demand draft drawn on any Nationalized Bank in favour of Director, NESAC and payable at SBI, Barapani Branch (Branch Code 2010) or through online bank transfer (A/c No. 10228761316, IFSC SBIN0002010)
Note : The course fee is to be submitted only by shortlisted candidates which will be made available at NESAC official website www.nesac.gov.in by January 31, 2020.
