North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) is a joint initiative of Department of Space (DOS) and the North Eastern Council (NEC) and came into being on 5th of September, 2000. The Centre helps in augmenting the developmental process in the region by providing the advanced space technology support. It is located at Umiam (Barapani) about 20 km from Shillong, Meghalaya State. The centre is well equipped with state of the art facilities for providing operational services and carrying out research in the areas of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS), Disaster Management, Satellite communication and Space & Atmospheric Science. Internet connectivity is provided throughout the NESAC office building with 1Gbps OFC Link (NKN) with a redundant backup link with 10mbps bandwidth. Sufficient numbers of image processing and GIS softwares like Erdas, Geomatica, ESRI ArcGIS, eCognition, etc. along with other open source software and tools are available in the lab

NESAC Outreach Programme

NESAC has established outreach facility centre with the aid of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to undertake wide range of capacity building activities in the region. It has the multiple collaborations with IITs, NITs, Central and State Universities of the regions, R&D institutions and a large number of user departments. NESAC has been conducting 2 weeks courses for the last three years in Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS as well as advanced course in UAV remote sensing. Many tailormade courses specific to the user departments such as ONGC, AMRUT, forest dept, Agriculture Dept. etc has also been conducted. Response for these programs were quite encouraging. So far around 522 numbers of participants were trained in various aspects of RS and GIS. The outreach centre is equipped with smart classrooms and labs with 150 thin clients served by highpowered servers with essentials software and audio-video recording facilities.
